B3 d) K3 w I Dr. Hongmei Chen – a young scientist studying photochemistry of natural organic matter Dr. Hongmei Chen recently joined the College of Ocean and Earth Sciences at Xiamen University (XMU) as an Associate Professor, and became a member of the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL) in October 2020.Dr. Chen received her PhD in Chemistry in 2014 at Old Dominion University (ODU), co-supervised by Professor Patrick G. Hatcher and Professor Kenneth Mopper. She conducted her postdoctoral study at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Professor Baohua Gu’s Environmental Research Group during 2015 and 2017. She worked as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at ODU from 2018 to 2020.Dr. Hongmei Chen has been working in the field of Environmental Organic Geochemistry for over 15 years, with a special interest on the photochemical reaction pathways of Natural Organic Matter (NOM). Her group will continuously investigate the role of sunlight in the conversion of NOM to greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane. Dr. Chen has been focused on the study of the fate of land-exported materials in the oceans. Her recent studies show that a significant portion of terrestrial DOM can sustain during the transport from land to Ocean, rather than being completely respired to gases. She closely examines the molecular rearrangement of NOM upon photoirradiation using the state-of-the-art analytical techniques, such as ultrahigh resolution FTICR-MS and NMR. Her group aims to provide transformative understanding of the pathways in which the large pool of terrestrial DOM becomes disseminated among the large carbon reservoirs, and to improve the general understanding of how carbon, nitrogen, and iron are cycled on different time scales. Dr. Chen has published almost 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals which have been cited for 1200+ times, with an h-index of 18 collectively.
